The story of the Old Testament prophet Elijah is familiar to any student of the Bible. His role as a prophet was difficult and dangerous. At one point, he fled for his life. In the desert, God ministered to him, and later in that journey, he traveled to the mountain of God, where he took refuge in a cave. God appeared to him, and from there he returned, refreshed, to his ministry.

Like Elijah, pastors and ministers need periods of disengagement, reflection and refreshment. However, the structure of many churches and pastoral roles plus the demands of the position make it difficult to find a place and a time for pastors or ministers and their spouses to be able to rest, recharge and return to their roles better prepared to deal with the stresses and demands. Finances are often an issue as well.

Purpose

The purpose of the Elijah’s Cave ministry is to provide a time and a place for rest and healing. Thanks to the generosity of home and condominium owners in the mountains of northeastern New Mexico, we are able to provide places for those involved in ministry to be able to take time away, rest and reflect in the beauty of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, and hear God’s voice reassuring them in the ways that Elijah and countless others have experienced throughout the ages.

  • Who may come?
  • Anyone involved in professional ministry on a full-time basis, and who is recommended to us through our network of advisors. Pastors or ministers may come by themselves or with their spouses. In general, we would recommend that it be simply pastor or pastor and spouse. This is not intended to be a vacation opportunity for extended families, but a time and place of healing, recovery and “battery recharging.”
  •
  • What services are offered?
  • This ministry is designed as a time of retreat and reflection. The time here is not structured. We provide the place to stay, free of charge. We are available for advice on things to do and see in the area, restaurants and other needs a visitor may have here. We are here to provide an ear to listen, a shoulder to cry on, or discuss our own experiences in leadership and ministry.
  •
  • What is the cost?
  • There is no charge for the property rental. Food, travel and other incidentals are not provided, although if finances are an issue, donations may be available to help with these costs as well. Depending upon the requirements of the individuals owning the various properties donated, the visitors may be asked to bring their own linens and towels.
